Хрещення є одним з найважливіших церковних свят. В цей день Іоанн Хреститель хрестив Ісуса в річці Йордан. Ісус Христос прийшов до нього з Галілеї. Коли Іоанн побачив Його, то, впізнавши у Ньому Месію, спочатку хотів утримати Ісуса, кажучи: мені потрібно хреститися від Тебе, чому Ти приходиш
до мене? Але Ісус відповів йому: облиш зараз, бо так належить нам виконати усяку правду. Тобі Іоанн допустив Його. І, хрестившись, Ісус в той же час вийшов з води, - і, відкрилися Йому небеса, і побачив Іоанн Духа Божого, Який сходив, як голуб, і опускався на Нього. (Мф. 3:13-16) Згідно християнського віроучення саме після Хрещення Ісус почав освічувати людей, осяюючи їх світом істини.
У західній церкві свято отримало назву Богоявлення, оскільки під час Хрещення Ісуса відбулося особливе явлення всіх трьох ликів Бога: Бог Отець з небес свідчив про Сина, що хрестився і Дух Святий у вигляді голуба зійшов на Ісуса, підтверджуючи таким чином Слово Отця.
У католиків центральним змістом свята Богоявлення є церковне сказання про поклоніння новонародженому Ісусу язичницьких королів – волхвів Каспара, Мельхіора і Валтасара, що прийшли з дарами у Віфлієм. В пам’ять про явлення Христа язичникам і поклонінні трьох королів в костелах відбуваються подячні молебні, Христу як Царю приноситься в жертву золото, як Богу – ладан, як людині – мірра. Свято Богоявлення отримало також назву Festum magorum (Свято волхвів) або Festum regum (Свято царів).

According to the Christian doctrine, it was after the Baptism that Jesus began to educate people, enlightening them with the world of truth.
In the Western Church, the holiday received the name Epiphany, because during the Baptism of Jesus, a special appearance of all three faces of God took place: God the Father from heaven testified about the Son who was baptized and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus in the form of a dove, thus confirming the Word of the Father.
For Catholics, the central meaning of the feast of Epiphany is the church legend about the worship of the newborn Jesus by the pagan kings - the wise men Caspar, Melchior and Belshazzar, who came with gifts to Bethlehem. In memory of the appearance of Christ to the pagans and the worship of the three kings, thanksgiving prayers are held in churches, gold is offered as a sacrifice to Christ as the King, frankincense as to God, and myrrh as to a man. The feast of the Epiphany was also called Festum magorum (Feast of the Magi) or Festum regum (Feast of the Kings).
