January 28, National flag of Ukraine

The national flag is an important authentic component of the symbolism of any country, which has the appropriate color and filling.

On this Day, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially approved the blue-yellow flag as the State Flag of Ukraine. Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine No. 2067-ХХ1 of January 28, 1992:

"Approve as the State Flag of Ukraine the national flag, which is a rectangular panel consisting of two horizontal stripes of equal width: the upper one is blue, the lower one is yellow, with a ratio of the width of the flag to its length of 2:3"

The transformation of this national symbol lasted more than one century: starting from a single-color canvas with a color symbol (sun, crescent, Archangel Michael, star) to a modern two-color one.

A bit of history

The first historical mention of the combination of blue and yellow elements in official symbols dates back to 1256 - the day of Lviv's foundation. The coat of arms of this city, in particular, was decorated with a golden lion on a blue background.

Gold and blue colors from the 14th century. were officially used in the coat of arms of the Russian kingdom. These colors are also on the coats of arms of the local nobility, princes, and nobles.

The combination of colors symbolic of the country can also be found in the days of the Cossacks, especially starting from the 18th century. The Zaporozhians often had blue flags decorated with golden ornaments, images of Orthodox saints or Cossacks.

The combination of blue and yellow colors finally took shape as a national color at the beginning of the 20th century. Starting from the 18th century, the regimental and hundredth Cossack flags of the Zaporizhzhya Army were made of blue cloth on which images were painted with yellow paint: stars, crosses, and weapons.

In the famous painting "Zaporozhians writing a letter to the Turkish Sultan", the Cossack spears also have yellow-blue cloths.

Thus, the first official recognition of the blue-yellow flag took place on March 22, 1918. Then the Central Council passed a law approving the combination of yellow and blue as the flag of the Ukrainian People's Republic.

Until 2004, the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine was celebrated only in Kyiv at the municipal level. The impetus for the introduction of the official and solemn holiday was the bringing of the blue-wheat flag to the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada by activists of the People's Deputies. Then the flag was consecrated by Petro Boyko, a priest of the UAOC. Today, the consecrated relic is kept in the museum of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

Vyacheslav Chornovil, Mykola Porovskyi, Ivan Zayets, Yaroslav Kendzor, Ihor Derkach and Volodymyr Kryzhanivskyi were among those who brought the flag to the Council.

The meaning of the colors of the flag of Ukraine:

According to the common interpretation, the blue color symbolizes a clear sky, and yellow - ripe wheat fields. It was this explanation that contributed to the popularization of the flag in Dnieper at the beginning of the 20th century. However, there are also other interpretations of the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

From a religious point of view, blue is the power of God, and yellow is faith. There is also a sacred version of the interpretation of the color scheme, according to which yellow is a sunny, fiery, creatively active divine principle (fire), and blue is something conservative, passive that needs activation (water). At the same time, not everyone likes this sequence of colors, so the stripes of the national flag are suggested to be swapped. This idea is often argued with feng shui and Ukrainian history.

Supporters of the idea of "inverting" the flag, in particular, claim that this order of colors is perhaps the main cause of Ukraine's misfortune. Therefore, according to them, for the prosperity of Ukraine, it is only necessary to "turn over" the flag.

Regarding the "historical" argument, indeed, the order of the stripes on the flag was uncertain for a long time, so both options were used. However, starting from 1848, the blue-yellow version gradually began to prevail, which was finally fixed in the 20th century.
